Citrine is a rare mineral with a vibrant, golden-brown tone and uplifting energy. Natural citrines have been cherished throughout history for their beauty and metaphysical properties.

How to Identify the Mineral Citrine

Citrine is a variety of quartz, having the same Silicon Dioxide (SiO2) chemical formula. Geologists identify mineral crystals, like citrine, through their physical characteristics of color, crystal shape, luster, and hardness.

Citrine forms the same hexagonal prismatic (6-sided barrel) crystals that have hexagonal pyramids on each end. Citrine is a yellow to golden-brown color of the mineral quartz. Its color is believed to be from a variety of iron in the crystal. Most of the citrines for sale in the world are heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz which transform into golden citrine. The best way to tell if citrine is natural or lab-created is a difference in the vibrancy of the color. Natural citrines are often pale yellow to deep amber or honey-colored. Lab-created citrine is a more vibrant golden brown. Additionally, natural citrine is very rare and thus commands a much higher price.

Natural citrine is often transparent to translucent so light can pass through the crystals. The mineral has a white to no streak, vitreous (glassy) luster, a low density, conchoidal fracture, no cleavage, and a hardness of 7 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness.

Metaphysical Properties of Citrine Crystals

The mineral citrine is celebrated for its positive and uplifting energy that is often associated with positive energy, abundance, and joy and is often used in manifestation practices.

Value and Common Citrine Locations

Citrine is very rare to find in nature. Most of the citrines available for purchase are lab-created by heating amethyst or smoky quartz. This does not negate the beauty of these citrine samples as they are true citrine crystals. The value of citrine can vary depending on factors such as color, clarity, cut, and size. Natural, untreated citrine is generally more valuable, and much more expensive, than heat-treated specimens.

There are no “famous” citrine samples but rather prominent locations for natural crystals.

  1. Brazil is known for producing large quantities of citrine, ranging from pale yellow to deep amber colors. The state of Rio Grande do Sul, specifically the Serra Gaúcha region, is an important source of high-quality, natural citrine.
  2. Madagascar is another notable source of citrine. Samples from this area are typically a rich, golden color with exquisite clarity in the crystals. The deposits in the Antananarivo Province produce citrine with exceptional brilliance.
  3. Geologists often find citrine fine in Colorado, North Carolina, and California in the United States.
  4. Spain, particularly the Catalonia region, is also home to beautiful natural citrine deposits.
